For many years, I have made drawings in pastel of landscape and still life and a few of my dog, Owyn, who is such a compelling subject. The work on this page is abstract—still using my favorite media—pastel, charcoal and some mixed media—but different subject matter. It came about from opportunities I’ve had in the past year or so to draw from life. In these sessions, the poses are short—too short for the studied way I’ve previously drawn the figure—so I started overlapping consecutive poses on the same paper; I combined components of the figure and the drawings ultimately became abstract.
This has been a gratifying experience for me because, as an art student in the mid-1960s, my work was abstract. I was taken by the freedom, expressive marks, brushwork and the abstract character of color and shapes in the work of artists like Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg and Helen Frankenthaler.
