My Truro: Reflections in Oils

“My Truro consists of two dozen or so oils that recall intimate experiences over a lifetime in Truro, Massachusetts and neighboring towns. I attempt to capture moments in time in this unique place: sun and moon rises and sets, storms, ever-changing beaches, dynamic dunes, sandy paths through bearberry-covered moors, scrub oak and pitch pine forests, and by kettle ponds and tidal rivers.

My first encounter with Truro began on a family vacation in 1956 when I was eight years old. Our hostess invited her neighbors, the artists, Edward Hopper and Josephine Nivison Hopper, for lunch so that we could meet them.

I have a vivid memory of seeing Hopper that day. They were seated on the sofa but I could see that he was extremely tall because his knees thrust up almost as tall as me. I was introduced as a young man who was interested in becoming an artist. There was a pause, and then Mr. Hopper said only, "It is a long, difficult life.” There was another pause, perhaps while the other adults pondered why this man would say that to an eight-year-old, and then I was ushered out. Eventually, I chose to practice law in Boston and enjoyed my career of over four decades.

But I never stopped wanting the experience of being an artist and making and showing my own paintings. I believe that my work represents my unique internal processing of experience as I am able to represent it.”
