Rooted in Memory
"I recall my connection to flowers beginning in early childhood. I have fond memories of helping my mother garden, spending summer mornings planting impatiens and bringing life to our family's backyard. I remember watching her fill our home with fresh flowers, adding more warmth and color to our familiar space. I continue that ritual today. When I see roses, I think of my grandmother, who treasured a painting of a rose that I made for her. It still hangs in her room, even years after her passing."
"As a collective, flowers are intertwined with our memories and experiences. They celebrate new beginnings and achievements, express love and acts of self-care, offer comfort in times of grief, and honor those we have lost. They quietly hold memory and emotion. In my practice, the flower has become a constant presence."
"This body of work is a meditation on memory through the exploration of floral imagery and intuitive mark making. Each mixed media work begins through observing and interpreting flowers collected from my life. As I work with my materials I feel a visceral response to the memory tied to the flower and the relationship between its organic form and my own gestures. I am drawn to interpreting flowers in varying stages of life, fascinated by shifting colors of wilt and decay. I engage with the physicality of texture, at times using plaster and sculptural floral forms to embed and preserve traces of memory within the work. These works invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences, finding connections between memory, emotion, and the forms that carry them."
