Robin MacDonald-Foley

Artist Statement:
I’m a multi-faceted artist with a passion for landscape themes in real and abstracted forms. After ten years of maintaining a studio, in 2004 I began working directly in nature—a haven of creative ideas ensued. Empowered by our ever-changing environment, my photography and sculptural work has been influenced by islands and coastal regions, places I’ve known since childhood. Documenting close and distal views, a myriad of colors, texture, and shapes, informs the way I process my art while recording time and being present in the moment.
Artist Bio:
A Quincy, Massachusetts native, Robin MacDonald-Foley received her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, where she developed her creative expression in a wide variety of mediums, including painting and the traditional art of stone carving. Her work has been included in many exhibitions both locally and nationally, and has been widely published in healing arts materials, educational textbooks, and sports magazines. Prior to her fine arts pursuits, Robin held a career in design and graphics. She currently teaches art in Mission Hill and is a recipient of the Mission Hill Fenway Trust Grant for art workshops. In 2019 she was awarded a Boston Harbor Islands Artist in Residence position, inspiring her work specific to islands and climate change. An avid bicyclist, Robin loves exploring the less traveled roads that inspire her art and writing.

Alan Strassman

Alan Strassman

Artist Statement:
I apply the early 20th century aesthetics of “straight photography” and “modernist photography” to capture unmanipulated images of the real world in the 21st century. I capture the monumentality of the ordinary, whether it is an abandoned building or everyday street life. The images pose questions rather than answers.

Whatever the subject, I never compromise careful attention to line, form, composition, texture and light. The finished product must be a compelling image. I compose in the camera’s viewfinder and use the computer like a traditional dark room to make adjustments of exposure, contrast and color balance in order to more closely approximate what the human eye can see.

Artist Bio:
A serious amateur for many years, photography became Alan Strassman’s second career in 2008. His work has been widely exhibited and is owned in private, corporate and museum collections. Recent exhibitions include group shows at the Attleboro Museum, Griffin Museum, Emerson Umbrella Arts Center, Danforth Museum, Cambridge Art Association, Panopticon Gallery and Connecticut Academy of Fine Art and solo exhibitions at The Harvard Graduate School of Education and The Newton (MA) Free Library.  His publications include Signs of Life, an illustrated history of photography and New England Mill Towns, contemporary images from the birth place of the industrial revolution in America. Alan has studied art history, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and photography at Princeton, Westchester Art Workshop, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Maine Media Workshops. Also, a graduate of the Harvard Business School, he has been active on the Board of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (President Emeritus) and on the Board of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Chairman Emeritus).

Carol Wontkowski

Carol Wontkowski

Artist Statement:
There is design and order in the universe, in spite of and apart from human influence. Gravitational pull, the seasonal changes, cellular replication, animal behavior, biological homeostasis, oceanic tides, the miracle of human gestation, mathematical equations and constructs all reflect and point to a Designer. Amidst the complexity of it all, as we peel away the outer layers, there often emerges a simplicity to what we see, think or feel. And the result can be surprisingly beautiful.

Though we live in a world marred by man’s pain, sorrow, violence, injustice, greed, prejudice and hate, there is still much beauty; beauty in the common things, everyday things around us. My desire is to create the most evocative image possible; to portray common things, often, in an uncommon way, in order to capture some of the essence of the Designer and to transport the viewer, no matter how briefly, to a more tranquil and serene view of this world.

I am drawn to both natural beauty and patterns that are naturally created, the everyday things we too often take for granted. It is a challenge the render this common beauty in an uncommon way or to simply woo its essence from what is seen.

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            -Dorothea Lange
